We work with qualified structural engineers on every project requiring steelwork. Their drawings specify what goes in, and our team installs it correctly.

We’ve also taken on structural repairs where a previous builder installed the wrong specification or got the installation wrong. Structural Engineer Commissioned

We work with qualified local structural engineers who will specify exactly what steel is required, the bearing dimensions, and any associated works. We can recommend engineers we’ve worked with on many previous projects.

Building Control Notified

The Building Control application is submitted and approved before any propping or structural work begins. The correct approvals are always in place, and there are no shortcuts here.

Works Carried Out & Signed Off

Our team carries out the structural works correctly, to the engineer’s specification, with the Building Control inspector signing off at the appropriate stages. You receive the completion certificate at the end.

The most common questions homeowners ask us before starting a structural alteration project in Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

Yes, for any load-bearing wall removal or structural opening, you will need structural engineer drawings specifying the correct steel section, the bearing dimensions and the padstone requirement. Building Control will not sign off structural work without this documentation. We work with local structural engineers on every project requiring steelwork and can recommend professionals we’ve used on many previous jobs.
A straightforward single steel installation, opening up a ground-floor wall for example, typically takes 2–3 days including propping, cutting, steel installation, padstone installation and initial making good. The main disruption is dust and the period while the temporary propping is in place. We keep the working area contained and clean up thoroughly throughout. For a standalone steel installation, most clients can remain in the house throughout.
Technically possible, but not advisable. Chimney breast removal on a ground floor requires a steel to support the breast above, which in a two-storey property means the breast on the first floor and the chimney stack above that. Getting the temporary propping wrong, or installing insufficient bearing for the steel, can cause serious structural failure. It’s also notifiable under Building Regulations. A completion certificate is required and matters for insurance and future sale. Get it done properly.
A knock-through involves removing a load-bearing wall between two rooms, typically the kitchen and dining room on a ground floor. The sequence is: structural engineer specification; Building Control notification; temporary propping of the load above; removal of the wall; installation of the steel beam on padstones; making good of the ceiling, walls and floor; plastering; decoration. We handle every stage in-house.
A straightforward single steel beam installation takes 2–3 days on site. A more complex project, chimney breast removal on multiple floors or a multi-span portal frame for an extension, can take 1–2 weeks.
