Why it matters

Gaz is a time-served bricklayer. Brickwork isn’t a subcontracted add-on. It’s where GSM started.

Not every building firm has a time-served bricklayer. Many manage brickwork by subcontracting it, which means the quality isn’t theirs to control, and the standard varies with whoever turns up. Gaz is a fully qualified bricklayer and has been laying brick since the beginning.

Every extension GSM builds, every garden wall, every repointing job, the brickwork is done by people who know what they’re doing. Matched brick sourced properly. Lime mortar where the building requires it. Bed joints level and cross joints staggered correctly. It sounds basic. It’s surprising how rare it is.

What Kind of Brickwork Do You Need?

From a full extension build to a front elevation repoint, Gaz is a time-served bricklayer and every job is done in-house to the same standard.

🧱

New Brickwork

Extensions, garden walls, outbuildings and boundary walls built in matching or complementary brick. Brick matching sourced properly, not left as an afterthought.

🔨

Repointing

Full rake-out of failed mortar and repoint in appropriate lime or OPC mortar, colour-matched to the existing. No skim over the top. Correct rake-out first, every time.

🔧

Brick Repairs

Spalling, cracked or damaged brick replaced in matching stock. We source matching brick before quoting, so you’ll see the match approved before any work begins.

🏗️

Retaining Walls

Structural retaining walls in brick or block with correct drainage and engineering spec. Designed to last, not just stacked up and hoped for the best.

Everything included

Set out correctly, built correctly, cleaned down on completion.

Every bricklaying job, whether a new extension wall or a front elevation repoint, is carried out to the same standard. Here’s what’s included as standard.

  • Setting out and profile
  • DPC (damp-proof course) installation
  • Cavity insulation (where applicable)
  • Facing brickwork in matching or complementary brick
  • Mortar mix to correct spec (lime or OPC)
  • Brick cutting to detail
  • Raking out of failed joints
  • Repoint, struck, weathered or recessed finish
  • Brick replacement (matched sourcing)
  • Pointing to copings and piers
  • Ties and fixings (structural brickwork)
  • Clean-down on completion

For extension projects, the brickwork is tied into the wider build programme. We don’t hand it off and we don’t rush the pointing to hit a deadline.

Our process

How Your Brickwork Comes Together

From site visit to clean-down: clear stages, honest pricing, work carried out to a standard that lasts.

01

Site Visit

Gaz assesses the scope, inspects existing brickwork for bond pattern and mortar type, and discusses brick matching. The site visit is where the quality of the job is determined, so we take it seriously.

02

Quote

Priced per job with material costs itemised. Matched brick may require sourcing time, so we allow for this in the programme and won’t start until the brick is approved.

03

Programme

New brickwork tied to the wider build programme where relevant. Standalone repointing and repairs typically within 2–4 weeks. Start date confirmed in writing.

04

Build & Clean Down

Brickwork built or pointed to standard. Cleaned down on completion: scaffold ties, mortar splashes and debris all removed before we leave the site.

Real Projects. Real Customers.

Our Bricklaying & Pointing Work

Where we work

Bricklaying & Pointing Across Chesterfield & Derbyshire

We’re based in Chesterfield and carry out bricklaying and repointing work across a 20-mile radius. Gaz attends every job personally. Brickwork is the trade he started on and the standard is the one he sets.

Chesterfield & Brampton Victorian Terraces

Original lime mortar pointing failing on Victorian terraces across Chesterfield and Brampton. Full elevation repointing is one of our most common standalone jobs. We use correct NHL mortar, not OPC cement, and rake out properly before any new mortar goes in.

Extensions Across Derbyshire

New brickwork to match existing is one of the most technically demanding parts of an extension. Gaz sources matching brick as standard, from Chesterfield red to buff and Staffordshire blue, often from local reclaim yards. Samples are approved before any new brickwork begins.

Garden Walls & Boundary Works

New brick boundary walls, gate piers and garden walls across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire. Set out correctly, DPC installed, coped and pointed to a finish that lasts. We don’t cut corners on garden walls any more than we do on house brickwork.

Peak District Properties

Limestone and gritstone walling in conservation areas requires specialist knowledge of mortar specification and material sourcing. We work in these areas regularly and understand the constraints that planning officers will impose.

FAQ

Bricklaying Questions Answered

The most common questions homeowners ask us before starting a bricklaying or repointing project in Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

Failed pointing shows as recessed, crumbling or missing mortar between the bricks. Other signs: white staining (efflorescence) on the wall face; damp patches on the internal face of an external wall; moss growing in the joints. If you can see more than one of these, the wall needs a close inspection and probably a full repoint.
Lime mortar, always. OPC cement is harder than the brick on most Victorian properties. As the wall moves with temperature and moisture cycles, the rigid cement causes the brick faces to spall off. This damage is irreversible. We use correct NHL (natural hydraulic lime) mortar on all period brickwork.
Yes, brick matching is fundamental to a good extension and we take it seriously. For common local brick types (Chesterfield red, buff and Staffordshire blue) we usually source from local reclaim yards. We’ll bring samples for approval before any new brickwork begins, so you’ll see the match before the first course is laid.
Depends on the area. A standard front elevation on a semi-detached property takes 1–2 days for a competent team with proper equipment. We won’t rush it. Correct rake-out is most of the work, and a joint that hasn’t been raked out properly won’t hold the new mortar for long.
Yes, and if the wall has moved a lot or the footings have failed, rebuilding is usually the right answer. Patching a wall on failed footings won’t last. We’ll tell you honestly at the site visit whether repair or rebuild is the correct approach for your specific wall.
