Why it matters

A roof job done badly doesn’t announce itself until water comes through the ceiling.

Poor pointing around chimney stacks. Valleys folded instead of lead-dressed. Tiles bedded in the wrong mortar and cracking within two winters. Roof problems are rarely visible until they’ve caused interior damage, by which point the cost of fixing them has multiplied.

We re-roof to a standard that lasts. Correct lead work, correct underlays, correct ridge and hip pointing. Gaz checks every stage personally, and all work is photographed on completion so you can see exactly what’s been done before the scaffold comes down.

Roofing types

What Kind of Roof Work Do You Need?

We handle every type of residential roofing, from targeted repairs to complete strip-and-re-roof projects across Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

🏠

Full Strip & Re-Roof

Complete removal of existing covering down to the rafters; new underlay, batten and tiles. The correct approach when the covering has failed or the underlay is beyond its lifespan.

🔧

Repair & Patch

Targeted repair of failed areas; ridge tile re-bedding, individual tile replacements, valley repairs. Honest assessment of whether repair or replacement is the right answer.

🟫

Flat Roof

Felt, EPDM rubber or GRP fibreglass flat roof replacement. Often required on extensions and bay windows. EPDM is the modern standard for long life without callbacks.

🔩

Lead Work & Flashing

Chimney stack flashings, valley lead, parapet copings, all cut and dressed in-house. No cement over the top; correct lead work that will last.

Everything included

From scaffold up to scaffold down, fully covered.

A complete re-roof is a multi-stage job. Here’s everything we carry out on a standard full re-roof project, all in-house, all photographed before the scaffold comes down.

  • Scaffold erection & strike
  • Full strip of existing covering
  • Inspection of rafter and sarking board condition
  • New breathable underlay
  • New treated softwood battens
  • New tile/slate supply & fix
  • Ridge & hip tile re-bedding
  • Lead flashing: chimney, valleys, abutments
  • Verge and eaves detail
  • Guttering re-hang (where disturbed)
  • Waste removal & skip
  • Photographic sign-off before scaffold down

Work is photographed at completion, so you see exactly what’s been done before the scaffold is struck. We won’t ask you to take our word for it.

Our process

How Your Re-Roof Comes Together

Four clear stages: honest assessment at the start, no surprises at the end. Here’s what to expect when you work with GSM on a roofing project.

01

Free Site Assessment

Gaz inspects the roof from ground level and (where safe and necessary) at close range. Honest assessment of condition and what work is required. No upselling a full re-roof if repairs will last.

02

Written Quote

Full itemised quote covering materials and labour. No vague “day-rate” pricing. You know exactly what you’re paying for before any scaffold goes up.

03

Scaffold & Programme

Scaffold erected before any work starts. Full programme agreed. You’ll know how many days on the tools and when the scaffold is due to come down.

04

Strip, Re-Roof & Sign-Off

Work carried out and photographed on completion. Scaffold struck only once you’re satisfied with what you’ve seen. No rushing the final sign-off.

Where we work

Roofing Across Chesterfield & Derbyshire

We’re based in Chesterfield and carry out roofing work across a 20-mile radius, close enough that Gaz can inspect the job personally and respond quickly to any questions during the programme.

Chesterfield Victorian Terraces

High proportion of ageing clay and concrete tile roofs requiring full re-roof. Common ridge tile failure on properties over 40 years old. We carry out more terraced re-roofs in Chesterfield than any other single job type.

Peak District Properties

Natural Welsh slate roofs requiring like-for-like matching. Careful sourcing for conservation area and National Park properties. We understand the material requirements and can advise on consent before any work begins.

1960s–80s Housing Across Derbyshire

Concrete interlocking tiles past their expected lifespan across Dronfield, Clay Cross, Alfreton and the wider area. Often combined with new fascias and guttering, which we include in the programme where they’re needed.

Flat Roofs on Extensions

EPDM rubber is the modern standard for flat roofs; a long-life alternative to felt that we install across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire. Often combined with a wider extension project.

FAQ

Roofing Questions Answered

The most common questions homeowners ask us before starting a roofing project in Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

Signs that repair alone won’t fix it: multiple tiles slipping per year; daylight visible in the loft; widespread cracking across the covering; underlay more than 40 years old. We’ll give an honest assessment at the site visit, and we won’t sell a full re-roof if targeted repairs will last.
A standard terraced or semi-detached house typically takes 3–5 days on the tools once scaffolded. Allow a further 1–2 days for scaffold erection and strike. Larger detached properties and those with complex roof shapes will take longer, and we’ll give you a specific programme with your quote.
Most like-for-like tile replacements are permitted development and don’t require consent. Properties in conservation areas or the Peak District National Park may require planning permission for material changes, for example switching from slate to concrete tile. We advise on this at the site visit before any work is quoted.
Tile choice depends on the existing property, your planning constraints and budget. We’ll advise on matching existing profiles and colours, and will bring samples to the site visit where helpful. For conservation area and National Park properties we source appropriate materials before quoting.
Yes, and it makes sense to replace or re-hang guttering while the scaffold is already up. We include it in the programme if required, at no additional mobilisation cost. Fascias and soffits can also be addressed at the same time if they need attention.
