The most common decking failure isn’t the boards. It’s the subframe. Posts set directly in soil rot from the base up. Joists spaced too widely allow boards to flex underfoot. Insufficient ventilation under the deck traps moisture against the timber, accelerating decay. You can specify the most expensive composite boards available and they’ll feel poor quality if the frame beneath them isn’t built correctly.
We build deck subframes on galvanised steel post anchors set into concrete, with correctly spaced joists, appropriate fall for drainage, and adequate ventilation clearance underneath. Composite boards are fixed with hidden fixings so there are no screw heads to rust and swell. The result is a deck that feels solid underfoot, drains properly, and doesn’t require annual maintenance or periodic replacement of individual boards.

Wood-plastic composite boards, low maintenance, fade-resistant and available in a wide range of colours and plank widths. No annual oiling, no warping or splitting, no splinter risk. Fixed with hidden clips for a clean finish. The most popular decking material for Derbyshire gardens where minimal maintenance is the priority.
Ipe, balau or European oak. Natural hardwood with excellent durability and a classic appearance. Requires periodic oiling to maintain colour but will easily outlast treated softwood if maintained. Harder and denser underfoot than composite, with a more traditional aesthetic suited to older properties.
Elevated decking platforms to level off sloping gardens or create a deck at house floor level. The subframe engineering is more critical at height. Posts must be correctly sized and adequately anchored. Balustrades and steps are included in the scope. We’ll assess whether building regulations apply for your specific height.
Freestanding or wall-fixed timber pergola structures, as a shade feature over a decked area or patio. We build in treated softwood or hardwood depending on the look required. Lean-to pergolas fixed to the house wall are also in scope. Designed to complement the overall garden scheme, not bolt on as an afterthought.

For decks over 600mm above ground level, we’ll check whether the installation requires building regulations notification, and if it does, we’ll include that process in the quote from the outset.

Gaz visits to measure the area, assess ground levels and drainage, check access, and discuss board material and colour options. For raised decks, we’ll assess the height above ground and advise on whether building regulations apply to your specific project. Samples of composite board colours can be brought to the visit.
Fixed-price quotation with subframe, board material, fixings, steps, balustrade and any pergola structure all itemised. Board material and colour confirmed before the quote is issued, so what’s priced is exactly what gets installed, with no substitution on the day.
Start date confirmed in writing. A standard ground-level residential deck typically takes 1–2 days. Raised decks, pergola structures and larger installations may take 3–4 days. You’ll receive a programme breakdown with your quote.
Once boarded, Gaz checks all fixings, tests the balustrade loading where applicable, and walks you round the finished structure. Any snags are dealt with before we leave. We clear the site completely, with no off-cuts, packaging or waste left behind.

Rear gardens in Chesterfield’s inter-war housing stock are often long and narrow, with a natural transition point where a deck at house level gives way to lawn or planted garden.
