Why it matters

A retaining wall without drainage behind it is a wall under permanent water pressure. It will fail eventually.

A retaining wall holds back soil, and soil holds water. Every time it rains, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall. If there’s no drainage, no weep holes, no granular backfill, no French drain, that pressure has nowhere to go except through the mortar joints and onto the face of the wall. Over one or two winters, you see bowing, cracking and eventual failure. The wall wasn’t too small; it was just not drained. It’s the most common reason retaining walls fail.

Gaz is a time-served bricklayer who builds retaining walls to the same structural standard as any wall in a building: correct footings for the height and load, granular backfill behind the structure, weep holes at the base, and a capping course that prevents water ingress from the top. If the height or site conditions require an engineer’s spec, we’ll tell you at the site visit and work to it.

Which Retaining Wall Is Right for Your Site?

The right choice depends on the height to be retained, the load above it, the site access, and whether the wall is visible as a garden feature or hidden. We’ll advise honestly at the site visit.

Brick Retaining Walls

Engineering brick or standard facing brick on mass concrete footings. The traditional choice for walls up to 1.2m in exposed garden settings. Facing brick allows the wall to be finished to match boundary walls and the wider garden aesthetic, not just a utilitarian block structure.

Dense Block Retaining Walls

Dense aggregate block (140mm or 215mm) on concrete footings, the cost-effective structural choice where the wall will be rendered, tiled or hidden behind cladding. Faster to build than brick and carries higher loads than standard facing brick. Common for raised patio surrounds and garden terracing.

Natural Stone Walls

Limestone, sandstone or gritstone retaining walls, particularly appropriate in North Derbyshire and Peak District settings where block or brick would be out of character. Dry-stone or mortared depending on the height and loading. We source local stone where possible and match the walling style of the area.

Sleeper & Timber Walls

Hardwood or softwood railway sleepers stacked and pinned with vertical timber posts, a cost-effective option for lower retaining walls (up to 600mm) in informal garden settings. Best suited to gardens where a natural or landscaped aesthetic is preferred and the wall will be fronted with planting.

Every retaining wall project covers the same structural sequence, from footing to capping. Here’s what’s standard on every job, regardless of material or height.

Site Visit

Gaz assesses the height to be retained, the ground conditions, drainage, access and what sits above the wall (boundary, garden, driveway or building). This determines the footing spec, wall thickness and whether an engineer’s input is needed. This is the most important stage. The spec is set here.

Written Quote

Fixed price covering excavation, concrete footing, wall construction, drainage installation and capping. If an engineer’s spec is required, this is noted and the engineer’s fee included. No surprises when the footing needs to go deeper than expected. We assess that at the visit.

Programme Agreed

Start date confirmed in writing. A standard single-run garden retaining wall typically takes 2–4 days depending on length and height. More complex terracing schemes with multiple levels and drainage runs are programmed with a day-by-day breakdown.

Completion & Sign-Off

Wall pointed and capped, drainage checked, site cleaned down. We walk you round on completion, and any remedial work identified on the day is dealt with before we leave. Where an engineer’s cert is required, this is provided before final payment is requested.

Retaining Walls Across Chesterfield & Derbyshire

Heights of 900mm to 1.2m are common, and multiple-level terracing schemes are not unusual. Drainage engineering is particularly important on these sites given the natural groundwater movement on sloping ground. We assess drainage carefully on every Dronfield site visit.

Peak District & North Derbyshire

In the Peak District and North Derbyshire villages, natural stone is almost always the material of choice for any retaining wall visible from the street or garden. Gritstone and limestone walls built correctly in NHL mortar will outlast any brick equivalent and blend with the existing character of the area. For walls within conservation areas, we can advise on whether listed building or planning consent is needed before work begins.

Sheffield & South Yorkshire

Sheffield’s topography means retaining walls are commonplace, particularly in the S17 and S18 corridors, where terraced rear gardens and sloped driveways are the norm rather than the exception. Retaining Wall Questions Answered

The most common questions homeowners ask us before starting a retaining wall project in Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

For most domestic garden retaining walls under 1.0m high, no planning permission is required. Walls adjacent to a highway (including footpaths) are limited to 1.0m; elsewhere the limit is 2.0m before planning is needed. Within conservation areas and for listed buildings, permitted development rights are restricted further. We’ll check at the site visit and advise you before any work starts.
As a rule of thumb, the footing depth should be at least one-third of the retained height, so a 900mm retaining wall needs a footing at least 300mm below finished ground level, typically with a concrete mass of 600mm wide by 200–300mm deep. In clay soils, deeper footings are usually required to get below the zone of seasonal shrinkage and swelling. We assess the soil type at the site visit and spec the footing accordingly.
Soil behind a retaining wall saturates with water after rain, and saturated soil is far heavier than dry soil. Without proper drainage, meaning weep holes, granular backfill and a French drain at the base, the water pressure builds up against the wall face. Over time, this forces mortar joints open, causes cracking, and eventually topples the wall. Drainage is not an optional extra; it’s what makes the wall last.
As a general guide, walls over 1.2m in height or walls retaining ground that is surcharged (i.e. there’s a building, vehicle load or steeply sloping ground above) should have an engineer’s input. We’ll tell you at the site visit whether the site conditions fall into this category. Where an engineer is needed, we’ll arrange this as part of the project and build to their specification, not around it.
Yes, and in many cases rebuilding is the right answer rather than trying to repair a wall that has moved a lot. A leaning retaining wall usually means the footing has failed or wasn’t adequate for the load. Pointing over a cracked face doesn’t fix the underlying structural problem. We’ll assess the footing condition when we strip the wall back and advise honestly on whether repair or a complete rebuild is the correct approach.
