We couldn't be happier with the work carried out by GSM. They completely transformed our home by removing our old kitchen, knocking through the internal wall between the kitchen and dining room, carrying out all the associated building work, and installing our beautiful new Chatsworth…
Driveways & Block Paving in Chesterfield & Derbyshire
Block paving, tarmac, resin and pattern-imprinted concrete driveways installed to last by a team that sets out properly, lays a proper sub-base, and finishes to a tight edge. We cover Chesterfield, Dronfield, Sheffield and the wider Derbyshire area.
A driveway that sinks, shifts or weeds within five years was built on the wrong sub-base. That’s the whole story.
Most driveway problems, whether blocks sinking in patches, surface cracking after the first hard frost, or weeds forcing through joint sand within two seasons, all trace back to the same cause: inadequate excavation and a sub-base that wasn’t specified to carry the load. You can see a finished block-paved driveway look perfect on day one and fail within three years if the groundwork wasn’t right. No surface material fixes a poor base.
Gaz is a time-served bricklayer who carries out driveway work to the same standards he applies to structural work, which means correct excavation depths, MOT Type 1 compacted to spec, falls engineered into the design from the start, and edging restraints set in concrete. We don’t rush the groundwork to save a day’s labour. The surface gets all the attention; we make sure what’s underneath earns it.
Which Driveway Surface Is Right for You?
Block paving, resin bound, tarmac or pattern-imprinted concrete: each surface has its place. We’ll advise honestly on what suits your property, your budget and your drainage requirements.
Block Paving
Concrete or clay blocks laid in herringbone or stretcher bond on a compacted MOT sub-base. Repairs are straightforward, as individual blocks can be lifted and re-laid rather than replacing the whole surface. The most popular choice for homes in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.
Resin Bound
Aggregate bound in clear resin, a smooth, permeable surface that doesn’t require the same drainage constraints as block paving. Low weed growth compared to block work. Popular on newer builds and contemporary front gardens where an unbroken finish is preferred.
Tarmac & Macadam
Bitmac laid on compacted sub-base. Fast to install, cost-effective for larger areas, and practically maintenance-free. Can be finished with a decorative aggregate or kept plain. The most durable surface for drives with heavy vehicle use.
Pattern-Imprinted Concrete
Coloured concrete with a pressed surface pattern that can replicate cobblestone, slate or brick block appearances at lower cost. Requires professional installation to get expansion joints right. A single poured surface with no joints for weeds to colonise.
Excavated to depth, drained correctly, edged in concrete.
Every driveway we install covers the same ground, from break-out and excavation through to final compaction and clean-down. Here’s what’s standard on every job.
- Break-out and removal of existing surface
- Excavation to correct formation depth
- MOT Type 1 sub-base, compacted in layers
- Falls engineered for surface drainage
- Concrete haunch to all edging courses
- Drainage channel or soakaway where required
- Sand bed screeded to falls (block paving)
- Blocks or surface laid and compacted
- Kiln-dried jointing sand brushed in
- Plate compaction of finished surface
- Dropped kerb liaison (where applicable)
- Full clean-down on completion
SUDS (sustainable urban drainage) compliance is built into every new driveway. We use permeable sand and follow current permitted development guidance so you don’t need planning permission for your new surface.
How Your New Driveway Comes Together
From site visit to clean-down: clear stages, honest pricing, sub-base done right before any surface goes down.
Site Visit
Gaz visits to measure the area, assess the existing surface condition and drainage, check for any dropped kerb requirements, and discuss surface options. The site visit determines the correct excavation depth and spec. It’s not just a measure-up.
Written Quote
Fixed-price quotation with excavation, sub-base, surface material and edging all itemised. No surprises when we dig down further than expected. We assess that at the site visit, not after we’ve started.
Programme Agreed
Start date confirmed in writing. A standard residential driveway typically takes 2–4 days from break-out to finished surface. You’ll know when we’re arriving and when you’ll have your driveway back.
Completion & Sign-Off
Final compaction, jointing sand brushed in, edges checked, site cleaned down. We walk you round the finished job before we leave. Any snags identified on the day are dealt with before we go, not chased down afterwards.
Our Driveways & Block Paving Work

Driveways & Block Paving Across Chesterfield & Derbyshire
We’re based in Chesterfield and install driveways across a 20-mile radius. Every job is attended by Gaz. No sales teams, no subcontracted crews. The same standard whether you’re in town or out in the villages.
Chesterfield & Brampton
Chesterfield’s mix of inter-war semis and Victorian terraces means most front gardens are either concrete or old tarmac that was laid decades ago. Block paving replacement is one of our most common Chesterfield driveway jobs, and many properties can accommodate a full-width drive with a dropped kerb if it’s not already in. We liaise with Derbyshire County Council on dropped kerb applications as part of the service where required.
Dronfield, Eckington & Surrounding Villages
The steeper gradient of many driveways in Dronfield and Eckington means drainage and falls require careful engineering. A level sub-base won’t behave the same way on a 1-in-8 slope. We survey the site properly at the outset and design the drainage channels accordingly. Block paving in these areas tends to use buff and charcoal blocks rather than the red more common in Chesterfield town.
Peak District & North Derbyshire
In villages within or on the edge of the Peak District National Park, planning constraints can limit what surface materials are permissible on front gardens visible from the highway. Resin bound aggregate and permeable block paving are typically acceptable where impermeable surfaces would not be. We understand these constraints and will advise on compliant surface choices before you commit to a specification.
Sheffield & South Yorkshire
We take on driveway work in Sheffield and South Yorkshire where the job warrants it. Larger block paving driveways and courtyard schemes on detached properties are typical of what we travel for. If you’re in Sheffield S8, S17 or S18 corridors, call us and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s in range.
