The standard that holds up

Plastering done well is invisible. Done badly it shows through every coat of paint.

A bad plaster job isn’t obvious when it’s wet. It shows up under the first coat of emulsion, on every wall, in every light. Ripples, joins, key lines, shrinkage cracks. By then the room is half-decorated and fixing it means sanding back and skimming again.

GSM’s team has plastered hundreds of rooms across Chesterfield and Derbyshire, and because we carry plastering in-house on every project, the standard has to be right. Our plasterers work alongside our joiners, electricians and decorators. A bad skim reflects on the whole job.

Plastering types

What Kind of Plastering Work Do You Need?

From a single room skim to full drylining and Artex removal, we handle the lot.

🏠

Full Skim Coat

Skim coat applied to walls and ceilings throughout a room or entire property. The most common requirement after a renovation or when existing plaster has deteriorated.

🧱

Dot-and-Dab Drylining

Plasterboard bonded to existing walls before skimming, used for insulation, damp-proofing or to create a flat surface on uneven brickwork or blockwork.

🔧

Patching After Structural Work

Replastering around new openings, lintels, beams and pipework chases, matched to the surrounding surface and finished flat for decoration.

Artex Removal & Skim

Artex removed and surface re-skimmed to a flat finish. We don’t skim over Artex as it rarely gives a satisfactory result. The right approach is to remove it first.

Every element in-house

From the first PVA coat to the final trowel pass.

A thorough plastering job involves more preparation and detail than most people expect. Here’s everything we handle.

  • PVA preparation
  • Scratch coat (where required)
  • Skim coat, walls
  • Skim coat, ceilings
  • Dot-and-dab plasterboard installation
  • Beading (angles, edges, window reveals)
  • Patching around structural alterations
  • Cornice & coving repair
  • Plastering around new openings
  • Dry lining to moisture-resistant spec in wet areas
  • Final float & trowel finish
  • Prepared surface ready to decorate
Our process

How Your Plastering Project Comes Together

Four clear stages. Walls and ceilings finished flat and ready to decorate on time.

01

Site Visit

Gaz assesses the condition of existing surfaces, the scope of work and any prep required before skimming, so the quote reflects the actual job.

02

Written Quote

Clear per-room or whole-property price. Prep work such as boarding, removal and patching is itemised separately so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.

03

Prep & Prime

Walls cleaned back, PVA applied, any boarding completed before the skim coat goes on. Prep done properly means a skim that lasts.

04

Skim & Finish

Walls and ceilings skimmed to a flat, consistent finish, ready to decorate when dry. We don’t rush the drying time and we don’t leave before the trowel finish is right.

Our Plastering Work

Where we work

Plastering Across Chesterfield & Derbyshire

We’re based in Chesterfield and carry out plastering work across the town, North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, both as a standalone service and as part of larger renovation and extension projects.

Chesterfield Victorian Terraces

Original lime plaster in poor condition is one of the most common problems we see in Chesterfield’s Victorian terraces. Full re-plaster is frequently the right call, and we do it properly with correct prep and PVA rather than plastering over failing surfaces.

New Extensions Across Derbyshire

Drylining and skim coat are part of every extension project we build. We don’t bring in a separate plastering firm. Our plasterers are on programme from the moment the first fix is complete.

Post-Renovation Properties

Re-plastering as part of full renovation programmes: structural alterations, new openings and service chases all patched and finished to a flat, consistent standard throughout.

Standalone Plastering Jobs

Single rooms, ceilings, or patching after other tradespeople. We take on plastering as a standalone job where our schedule allows. Call Gaz to discuss availability.

FAQ

Plastering Questions Answered

The most common questions homeowners ask us before starting a plastering project in Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

Minimum 3–4 weeks before painting. Rush it and paint peels off as moisture escapes. It’s one of the most common mistakes made after a replaster. The surface looks dry long before it is. We’ll tell you when it’s safe to start decorating.
Skimming applies a thin plaster coat over existing surfaces or plasterboard. Drylining (dot-and-dab) is fixing plasterboard directly to walls before skimming, used for insulation, damp-proofing or to create a flat surface on uneven walls. Most full renovation projects require both.
We remove Artex before skimming. Covering it with skim coat rarely gives a good finish. The texture telegraphs through in raking light, particularly on ceilings. The correct approach is to remove it first, and that’s what we do.
Depends on room size, condition of existing surfaces and whether boarding is required. We quote per job after seeing the space. A single room skim is a straightforward price, but a whole-property replaster with prep work involved needs a proper site visit first.
Yes, including older properties with lath-and-plaster ceilings that need re-boarding and skimming. We assess whether the existing laths are worth keeping or whether a full re-board is the right call.
